This handblown green, brown, gold, and white glass vase has a dynamic color pattern created by blowing into upcycled waste from the murrine-making process.
To make murrine, canes (glass rods containing concentric circles of color) are first assembled and pulled out in long rods roughly the diameter of a pencil. Then those canes are cut into segments and groups of those segments are bundled to form a colored pattern and are wired together. Then those bundles are heated and melted together and then stretched again, to form a rod roughly 1 inch in diameter that is then broken or cut into thin disks of patterned glass known as murrine. This process always leaves a less stretched “knuckle” at one or both ends of the pull. This vase is blown into one of those knuckles. The result is a vibrant pattern of twisted and stretched green, gold, and brown canes, some seen side-on, some seen end-on. At least three days of studio time go into fabricating complex canes and then the murrine pull itself, even before the actual making of the vase. This vase is one of a kind and was blown by the artist (David L Smith) with a unique shape and pattern. Because this is hand-blown, there are small bubbles and tool marks present in the piece that are artifacts of the studio glass process. This vase is a piece of art and is signed and dated by the artist. And it it a practical object as well, suitable for use every day. Hand washing recommended.
